ISBN 978-0-06-125364-5$17.99 Reviewed from galleys Ad Gr. 3-5 Less a biography than a poetic tribute, Shange's free-verse narrative conveys the determination and spiritual fervor of civil rights leader Coretta Scott King. As the title implies, this work attempts to bring Scott King out from her husband's shadow, and it's more successful in that attempt visually than verbally. Nelson's monumental artwork, in a slightly oversized format that allows him to render several faces at life-sized scale, consistently places Dr. King's profile behind his wife's whenever they are shown together in close-up. There is, however, precious little specific information about Scott King within the text, much of which concentrates more on boycotts and marches than on her involvement in them. Even the extended allusion to her singing is likely to bypass readers who skip over the endnote that contextualizes the poetry. This title will be best appreciated by children with sufficient background on 1950s and 1960s activism to understand the poignancy in such lines as \"things nature never intended/ a child to see/ haunted them.\" For those who do master the references, this could be an effective declamation piece for Black History Month. 59ce067264
