The application of the physics of polymers in soil-structure interaction (SSI) is in its infancy. This work addresses two areas that are particularly relevant to the application of polymer-soil interfaces in SSI. First, the use of a finite element model to analyze the effect of water-induced plasticity on the deformation of polymer-soil interfaces during a rainfall event. Second, the use of a raindrop model to quantify the deformations of polymer-soil interfaces. Results from both analyses of raindrop impact on polymer-soil interfaces show that the deformation of polymer-soil interfaces depends on the type of polymer used. In particular, the tensile strength of the polymer used (i.e., its Young's modulus) determines how the contact area between the interface and the raindrop deforms. Once the tensile strength of the polymer used is known, the deformation of a given interface during a raindrop impact can be predicted. The model was used to simulate the deformation of polymer-soil interfaces during the impact of a raindrop with the interface to a solid soil. The deformation of these polymer-soil interfaces is important when considering the use of polymer-soil interfaces for water infiltration. This study has important implications for the design of polymer-soil interfaces for rainfall infiltration. The current study finds that the use of high-strength polymers in polymer-soil interfaces could result in significant changes in the deformation of the interface during a rainfall event. This deformation could affect the flow of water through the interface during a rainfall event, and thus ultimately the ability of the interface to reduce infiltration. Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
