If you need a refresher on how to use Facebook for marketing your business or you want to sign up for a personal account, check out this in-depth explanation of how to use the most popular social media network in the world.
Set up your privacy settings. Personalize your profile. Like and follow public pages. Review your timeline. Add friends on Facebook. Post on Facebook. Add photos and videos. Connect with friends. Review your newsfeed. Discover additional Facebook features.
When you stop using a social networking profile or website, it is a good idea to deactivate or delete your account. This will mean that your content is no longer visible online and should not be searchable online. It will also remove the risk of these accounts being used by others or hacked without you knowing.
On Twitter, you deactivate your account and it deletes permanently after 30 days. During this time your account is deactivated. Deactivation is not available on mobile devices and must be done by accessing twitter.com on the web.
You are only able to permanently delete your account on Snapchat. It takes 30 days for the deletion to take place, in which time your account will be deactivated.
During these 30 days, your friends will not be able to contact or interact with you on Snapchat. After 30 days, your account will be permanently deleted, including your friends, Snaps, Chats and Stories. Your username will no longer be available.
If you change your mind in the 30 days after deleting your account you can log back into Snapchat like you normally would using your username and password. This will reactivate your account and stop your account being deleted.
Your Facebook Timeline, the new version of the Facebook profile page, contains a collection of posts related to your previous Facebook history. It also contains information about you, including your work history and your contact information. If you want to keep people from reading this material, you should mark it as private. You may also choose to remove it altogether. For example, after setting up a Facebook profile, you may decide to use the account exclusively for professional purposes such as editing your company Facebook pages. The account's profile in such cases would no longer need your personal information.
Click the \"Edit\" link beside \"Basic Info.\" Delete the text in the boxes for language, religion and political views. Uncheck the box labeled \"Show my sex on my timeline.\" Click the icons in the right of the \"Birthday,\" \"Interested In\" and \"Relationship Status\" panes. Click \"Only Me\" in each pop-up menu. Click \"Save.\"
In late September, Facebook launched the new timeline look. At that time, I wrote an article on How To Get Your New Facebook Timeline Now. Since that time, Facebook has made the process much simpler and I wanted to share how you can grab the new timeline look in a few quick and simple steps.
Scroll through your new timeline and edit or remove any items that you may not want to show up in your timeline. To do this, hold your cursor over the upper right corner of the item that you want to edit. A pencil icon and a pop up will appear that reads Edit or Remove. Choose whichever one works for you.
If you click on the pencil icon you will see options to Change Date, Add Location, Hide From Timeline and Delete Post. This gives you a lot of options for controlling what is visible in your timeline.
Or you can wait until December 22 when Facebook will do the change for you. In my opinion, there really isn't any need to hold out because, on December 22, all Facebook users are going to be converted to the new timeline. It is best to take this step yourself and set up your timeline with what you wish to be viewable in this new format.
One of the really great things about Facebook's new timeline is that you can actually brand your personal profile using the ecover graphic area at the top of the new timeline format. Click here to see how I have branded my personal profile to reflect my personal as well as my business life. Please leave me a note and let me know you dropped by :-)!
I set up my timeline last week. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I do! I enjoyed reading stuff posted from several years ago! It gives you more of an idea of who that person is rather than reading a resume-like profile.
Thanks for the info about highlighting your best posts, I hadn't discovered that one yet. I know people are constantly complaining about Facebook changes, but I think they've really done good this time. I love the new timeline, although it does take some practice, like everything new. Thanks Kim, your blog is always relevant and full of good advice.
This is very helpful info! I have been having a problem with the timeline and maybe you can help! Since I moved to the timeline, I have been having a hard time with the Pages of others that I have \"liked\"- #1 I am not seeing comments from pages that I have liked in my newsfeed and #2 I can only find the list of the pages that I have liked when using my iPhone. Thanks!
Activity Log is a new tool that comes with Timeline and will enable you to modify aspects of what shows up in your timeline. From there you can hide or delete posts or you can promote posts to featured status.
However, there is another option. Rather than deleting Facebook, you can just deactivate your account. But what happens when you deactivate your Facebook account If you deactivate Facebook, can you still use Messenger And what does deleting Facebook mean in contrast to deactivating it
Deleting Facebook is more permanent. It's a decision that you shouldn't take lightly. If you delete your account, you can't come back and expect any of your data to still be intact. There is a way to start again, but we'll return to that later on.
Otherwise, it takes 90 days for Facebook to remove information on a deleted account from its servers. Some details will still exist, but any personal identifiers will disappear. You'll become a statistic.
How do you make sure your deactivated Facebook profile disappears Try a simple search, either through a friend's profile or using Google. The former is a better option; otherwise, it could take a lot of time scouring results featuring others with the same name as you. This should tell you if others can still find you, even after deactivating your account.
If deactivation has worked, your posts on your own timeline won't be publicly visible, and your friends shouldn't be able to see them either. Your whole profile will have gone. But that doesn't mean comments you've made to others will disappear as well.
What happens if you delete Facebook permanently Facebook will erase your data within three months, but there are no guarantees that it will clear every last bit of flotsam and jetsam, i.e. comments, reactions, and posts on others' timelines.
What does a deactivated Facebook account look like You won't be able to check their profile because links revert to plain text. Posts they've made on your timeline will still exist but you will not be able to click on their name.
Look through your list of friends. If they're still listed, they're probably just preoccupied. If they're not, the second possibility is that they've blocked you. But before you investigate that, question whether they've deleted their account completely.
Check on Messenger; there could be a technical issue. You can't send a message to someone who has blocked you, and their profile picture will be replaced on any comments they've previously posted on your timeline.
When you deactivate your account, Facebook will ask if you want to deactivate Messenger too. Say no, and the app will retain your information. If you'd prefer to go without the instant messaging service, you can deactivate Messenger separately.
Yes, you can still use Messenger, so it follows that your messages will appear after deactivating your account. In fact, when you press \"Send,\" as long as you have internet access, the message will go straight to the recipient's inbox.
If you've deactivated your Facebook account, all you need to do is log back in. You can change your password if you've forgotten it. Your profile still exists, as does your personal information. Previous messages and comments typically re-appear too.
The social network lets you download a copy of all the data Facebook has stored about you. That means you can get your account back up and running, although the process is a bit trickier than if you've merely deactivated it.
Much the same happens after deletion; tags will revert to plain text. If you open a new account, those original tags won't link automatically with your name again. Just think of the number of people with the same name as you.
Legacy contacts are named by the account holder prior to their death -- a family member or a friend who will be able to manage the person's memorialized account when they die. Legacy contacts can post a pinned post at the top of the deceased user's Timeline, respond to new friend requests, and update the person's profile picture and cover photo. They can also, with the deceased user's permission, download an archive of the user's photos, Timeline posts, and profile information.
To choose a legacy contact, open up your Facebook account and go to Settings > Security > Legacy Contact. Click Edit, type in your friend's name, and click Add.
You will have the choice to send them a message about your choice immediately -- click Send to send them the message, or click Not Now if you'd prefer they not know about your decision. You'll need to eventually tell them, of course, because they will need to ask Facebook to memorialize your account when you die.
Once you've chosen a legacy contact, you'll see the option to allow them to download a copy of your Facebook account under Data Archive Permission. To allow your legacy contact to do this, click the checkbox and click Close. 153554b96e
